Adopting A Pet Pomeranian
By Lee DobbinsIf you are looking for a toy dog that is intelligent, curious, lively and cuddly, then the Pomeranian could be the dog for you! Before you enter into dog ownership of any breed, however, you must ask be honest with yourself about if you are ready for the commitment of money and time that it takes to be a responsible dog owner.
The first thing you must do is make sure you know what you are getting yourself into. Are you ready to spend time training and grooming your Pomeranian? Is your family agreeable to the decision? Are you aware of the expense associated with responsible dog ownership and are you must insure your Pom has the appropriate veterinary care?
If your answers are yes, then all systems are go!
Before you pick out your perfect Pom, think about where you want to get him from. There are 2 basic places you can use to find a Pomeranian that suits you – A rescue organization or a Pomeranian breeder.
At a rescue organization, you will be able to find Poms that have been left homeless either to abandonment, death of owner or simply because they got lost. Some of these Poms may not have had a happy life before getting rescued and may have some problems, but there are many others that have no issues at all. You may have to wait a while before one that fits your criteria comes up, but it is a great way to give a needy animal a loving home.
If it's a puppy you want to buy, or you plan to show the dog, you probably want to go straight to a breeder. If you do plan to buy from a breeder, make sure you use one that has the good of the breed at heart and not just trying to make a quick buck. Some things to consider when reviewing breeders are:
- Length of time in business and how many puppies they produce every year – too many may be an indication that they are more interested in money then in enhancing the breed.
- Ask if they are involved in rescue for the breed- it shows a compassion and caring for the breed.
- Make sure they know the standard for the breed.
- Find out if their breeders are registered.
- Ask if any of their dogs have been found to have genetic defects – they should not still be breeding these dogs.
- A reputable breeder will be most concerned that his puppies are going to good owners. If the breeder is grilling you about your family schedule and living environment then this is a good sign!

Clipping Your Birds Wings
By Lee DobbinsClipping a pet birds wings is a common grooming procedure and is necessary for training as well as for your pets safety. You might feel like you are being mean to the bird, but the fact is that it does not hurt the bird and can help to keep him from flying out of an open window or door and becoming lost. Most pet birds would not be able to survive in the wild, especially if your climate is not one that is natural for the bird.
You can clip your birds wings yourself at home, but it is best if you take him into the vet or pet shop and ask if they can show you the proper way to do it before trying it yourself!
Do not try to clip your birds wing until he is very tame and used to you holding him, otherwise the procedure will be very traumatic for you both. You need to make sure that your bird trusts you enough to hold him and open up his wings. Until your relationship has reached this stage, it is best to have this done by a professional.
Once your have your birds trust and are ready to clip the wings yourself, take your bird out of the cage and hold him for a while. You may need 2 people for this as it can be kind of awkward with only 2 hands. Spread the birds wing out and hold it out with one hand, have your scissors ready with the other hand.
You want to cut only the longest feathers – the one on the very bottom layer. Cut halfway up from the bottom of the wing in a line that is parallel to the wing. Some people leave the very last feather intact so when the birds wings are folded in, you can't really tell that they are clipped.
This should be a quick and painless procedure. After you have clipped his wing, your bird will still be able to fly, but not for any distance. When he does fly, he will most likely, have a downward motion to the flight, so if he starts off at a high spot, he'll able to fly to a lower spot with no problem. Pomeranian Care
By Lee DobbinsThe Pom is a little dog with a big personality! This tiny fluffy creature has a wedge shaped head and looks like a little fox. With it's bright eyes, it seems like it is always smiling and willing to please. It is intelligent and eager to learn, but a firm hand must be applied or this little darling can become yippy and demanding.
Along with all this cuteness and fluff, however, go some special grooming needs. While not excessively demanding, the Pomeranian does require some daily attention which you can use as a great excuse to bond with your pet!
Teeth
It is important that your pet get good dental care. Pomeranians are prone to tooth loss and bacteria build up. If the bacteria is allowed to run unchecked, this can cause problems with your pets overall health. Luckily, maintaining good dental health is easy! Simply buy an enzymatic toothpaste that fights bacteria (your vet can recommend a good brand) and a small tooth brush (I use the one that has a loop that fits on my finger). Try to brush your dogs teeth every day. Have your vet do a dental exam once a year and scaling if necessary.
Fur
Brushing your Pomeranian every day is a good way to bond with your pet as well as insure his coat is healthy and looks good. Poms have a double coat that can easily become matted so brushing is necessary. A once a week – or every couple of weeks – bath is a nice way to keep your Pom smelling and looking good! Don't forget to groom around his paws and tail area as well as clip his nails.
Eyes
Like most small dogs, Poms can have a buildup of discharge from their eyes that can cause a lumpy mess. This buildup can stain the fur and, although my Pom's never said anything, I'm sure it must be uncomfortable. To avoid this mess, simply clean the eye area each day with a Q-tip.
